Tripura CM hopeful of BJP's win in Dharmanagar byelection

By BJP PR / IH News Desk Mar 19, 2026 101

AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Thursday expressed confidence in the BJP's ability to win the upcoming by-election for the Dharmanagar assembly constituency on April 9. He stated that the party's central leaders have selected Jwahar Chakraborty as the candidate, rather than the decision being made at the state level.

Dr Saha described Chakraborty as a long-time member of the BJP and a gentleman.

"During my visits to Dharmanagar for party work, I used to ride on his bike. His family is also involved with the BJP. The people of Dharmanagar know him, which gives us an advantage and we are confident of winning. There is no doubt," he said.

Chief Minister underlined the BJP's seriousness in every election and their focus on completing the Assembly before starting their campaign.

"The tribal autonomous district council election has also been announced, so we have to work for two elections. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have been working towards development. We will go to the people with our development work," he added.

Regarding the Dharmanagar by-election, Dr Saha mentioned that the CPI(M) has already declared their candidate, and last year there was a Congress candidate from the opposition.

"However, this time they are facing difficulties. This will not be a problem for us as we have a strong candidate and we are confident of winning this seat," he stated.

Chief Minister also addressed the issue of the Village Committee (VC) election.

"We had initially planned to conduct the VC election first, but we were aware of the difficulties that would arise if it was held together with the TTAADC polls. We suggested conducting it in September due to the monsoon season, which lasts until August. The Supreme Court has questioned why it cannot be held in June, but the monsoon has already started. However, the Supreme Court will review the matter," he explained.
