Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Yatra banned in another state in NE
Due to fears of possible disturbance of public peace and order

KOHIMA, September 26, 2024: After Meghalaya, the Nagaland government Thursday banned the Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Yatra, a campaign against cow slaughter, in several districts of the state due to fears of possible disturbance of public peace. The order was issued by the state administration citing the fear of disruption of public order as the main reason for the ban.
The ban will remain in enforced in Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland areas of the state. The Nagaland government also invoked the provisions contained in Para (1) (a) (i) of Article 371(A) of the Constitution of India that guarantees special safeguards to Nagaland particularly in matters related to religious and customary practices.
Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, who launched the cow ban campaign, has been at the centre of controversies for making claims and allegations against political parties. In 2024, he fielded a candidate against Narendra Modi in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency.
Naga political, social and community organizations have vehemently opposed the 'Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Yatra' to be culminated in the state on September 28. The rally is being organised in support of the nationwide ban on cow slaughter, but it has been described as a threat to the cultural and social harmony of the region.
