Drugs worth Rs 24 cr seized in one month in Assam

GUWAHATI, June 10 2021: “Various security agencies during the past one month have seized drugs worth Rs 24 crore and arrested 500 peddlers,” Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said here Thursday.
Immediately after taking charge of the state a month ago, the BJP-led coalition government in Assam headed by the Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, had declared war on drugs.
Vowing to intensify the crusade against the drug abuse and trade of illegal drugs, the Chief Minister said that drugs are mostly smuggled from Myanmar and these are being traded making Assam as a transit route.
He said that of the around Rs 24 crore worth of drugs seized - heroin worth Rs 8 crore, ganja (cannabis) worth Rs 6 crore, tablets worth Rs 9 crore and other drugs worth Rs one crore -- were seized in just one month.
In order to facilitate the probe against the drugs related activities, Assam government has decided to set up seven more forensic laboratories in the state.
