Indi Alliance stands against women empowerment: CM

By CMO News Apr 23, 2026 97

AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Thursday vehemntly criticised the opposition parties, particularly those in the Indi Alliance, for allegedly insulting women for political gain and highlighting their self-centered politics that which he claims hinder women’s empowerment.

Speaking at a news conference here he stated that the opposition's obstruction prevented the passage of the important amendment to the Women’s Reservation Bill, a legislative measure aimed at securing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. He regarded the bill as a significant step toward gender equality in Indian politics.

Dr Saha characterised the Nari Shakti Vandan Act or Women’s Reservation Bill as a historic law passed in September 2023, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting its long-awaited demand that has evolved over nearly three decades with failed attempts dating back to 1996. He mentioned that the law stipulates 33% reservation for women, including in SC/ST constituencies and incorporates a rotational system for seat allocation through delimitation after elections to enhance women's representation across all constituencies.

Despite the passage of the law, Dr Saha pointed to potential delays in implementation due to the need for census completion, suggesting that further amendments may be necessary to facilitate its enactment.
