Science College qualified for DBT-Star College Scheme

By Various Apr 23, 2026 101

REGIONAL: Kohima Science College has distinguished itself as a leading higher education institution in India by becoming the first regional government college selected for the Department of Biotechnology’s “STAR College Scheme.” The college submitted its proposal in March 2025 and was among 34 institutions shortlisted nationally.

Dr Vethselo Doulo, the Coordinator and core committee member Along Longchari presented the final proposal on March 10, 2026, at the DBT headquarters in New Delhi, where only 10–15 colleges are selected each year for this honour.

This scheme will fund eight departments at the college—Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology—through grants from the Department of Biotechnology, under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Government of India. The allocated funds will primarily focus on enhancing laboratory infrastructure, obtaining advanced scientific equipment and conducting capacity-building initiatives, which include workshops, seminars and training programmes aimed at undergraduate students, faculty and the broader community.

Moreover, the scheme will facilitate the college in expanding its academic initiatives by promoting interdisciplinary learning, improving practical skills and fostering research-oriented education at the undergraduate level. The college recognises and appreciates the contributions of all past and present stakeholders in reaching this significant milestone and expresses pride in this achievement, which is anticipated to substantially improve the quality of science education in the region.

Kohima Science College remains dedicated to nurturing innovation and academic excellence, particularly in Nagaland.
