AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Thursday highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dedicated efforts toward the advancement of women, particularly in the context of women's protection and empowerment. During a special session of the state assembly focused on the Nari Shakti Bandhan, he expressed his disappointment that the Women's Reservation Bill was blokced in the Lok Sabha due to the opposition.

The Chief Whip introduced the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill, aiming for 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, which Dr Saha hailed as a significant step toward women's empowerment.

He stressed on need for constructive discussions within the assembly on this topic and expressed hope for unanimous support for the proposed amendment. Addressing concerns on delimitation, he clarified that it would be based on population rather than region, ensuring no decrease in representation for any specific area.

Chief Minister criticised the opposition for creating confusion among the people and consistently opposing government initiatives, citing past instances like Article 370 and the Citizenship Amendment Act. He reiterated that Prime Minister is earnestly working for women's welfare aiming to eliminate gender inequality through legislation such as the recently passed Women's Reservation Bill, which reserves 33% of seats for women, including specific allocations for SC and ST groups, representing a framework that has been vividly sought for three decades.
