NATIONAL, July 02, 2024: At least 116 people are believed to have lost their lives in a stampede during a Satsang (preaching event) in the Ratibhanpur area of Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district Tuesday. The majority of the victims were women and children while many injured admitted in various hospitals

The Hathras District Magistrate earlier confirmed that approximately 50 to 60 people were killed in the stampede. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed to assist with rescue operations.

A committee including the ADG of Agra and the Commissioner of Aligarh has been formed to investigate the cause of the incident. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi have expressed their condolences and shared their heart-wrenching reactions to the tragic news of the deaths of many devotees, including women and children.

The Chief Medical Officer of Etah district, Umesh Kumar Tripathi, has informed the news media that twenty-seven bodies, including 25 women and two men, have been brought to the post-mortem facility.

The primary cause of the stampede is believed to be overcrowding at the religious event, which was attended by at least 2.5 lakh devotees to hear the preaching of Narayan Hari, also known as 'Bhole Baba'. The police have not yet filed any charges against Bhole Baba.
