NATIONAL, August 27, 2025: US tariffs of 50% on goods from India imposed by Prescient Donald Trump as a punishment for India’s purchase of Russian oil and weapons came into force Wednesday. The tariffs, among the highest in the world, include a 25% penalty for transactions with Russia.

India a strategic US partner in the Indo-Pacific has not stopped its oil purchases from Russia calling the tariffs unfair. However, fears of exports and growth in the world's fifth-largest economy could suffer.

India has assured to cut taxes to mitigate the impact of the tariffs, which could disrupt millions of livelihoods across India's export-driven industries.
