AGARTALA, September 24 2023: The strike call of the TIPRA in Tripura tribal council areas on September 30 to press Greater Tipraland demand is attributed as its desperate ploy to prevent further crack in the regional party and to keep its support base. Pradyot Kishore Manikya, the founder of the party who recently relinquished his Chairman portfolio and remained as mere member of the party’s Central Working Committee, has ended his silence and made hasty announcement also to condemn central government’s alleged apathy to address the issues of the indigenous people.
The party recently witnesses defections with senior leaders like Dinesh Debbarma and Sridam Debbarma walking out and reviving the Tipraland State Party which in 2021 merged with the TIPRA. The defectors said more are expected to join them.
Sources said TIPRA founder has been facing rebellion for his alleged ‘questioning’ attitude in matters of importance and neglecting senior folks to highlight new generation of leaders. His ‘personal’ connection with senior BJP leaders was also not liked by many within his ranks.
Under stress, Pradyot reportedly made a comeback in tribal political arena to keep the Greater Tipraland or a separate tribal homeland. The demand has been his political plank based on which TIPRA won elections in the tribal autonomous district council in 2021 and became the largest opposition party in assembly elections held in February 2023.
