Tripura government acted tough, suspended SDM, show caused DM

AGARTALA, August 06, 2025: The Tripura government Wednesday suspended the SDM of Teliamura and show caused the DM of Khowai in connection with the tragic death of a driver after his truck faced a road accident. The victim, Mihir Lal Debnath, could have been saved if the rescuers under the district administration had made proper rescue efforts.

The road mishap occurred at Chakmaghat in Teliamura subdivision in the wee hours yesterday. Debnath got stuck up under the truck for hours before he breathed his last.

An initial probe found that a lack of skilled emergency service personnel and equipment led to the death. The lifeless body was pulled out after seven hours of the accident.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha yesterday announced that he took cognizance of the whole gamut and ordered an inquiry. His office Wednesday announced that SDM Parimal Majumder has been suspended from service with immediate effect and the District Magistrate of Khowai Rajat Pant has been show caused.

A three-member committee with the Revenue Secretary as head was constituted to investigate the incident and make recommendations.

Meanwhile Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has ordered financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh (Rs 4 lakh from Disaster Management and Rs 2 lakh from the Chief Ministers’ Relief Fund) to support the bereaved family members who reside in Kanchanpur, north Tripura.

The Chief Minister also assigned two cabinet ministers to visit the victim’s residence. He said the state government under him is firmly committed to justice and upholding the people’s faith in government.
