
REGIONAL: Minister for Tourism & Higher Education Temjen Imna Along graced the 30th Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship 2026 and the inaugural NWA Wrestling Festival 2026 at Khuochiezie, Kohima Friday. Organised by the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Department of Tourism, the event celebrated the progress of Naga traditional wrestling.
Along emphasised the community's collective role in promoting the sport and recognised wrestlers as ambassadors.
NWA Advisor Er Lhoubeizo Kesiyie welcomed attendees including 20 former champions, highlighting the event's importance in fostering unity among the people of Nagaland. NWA President Kenlum Hemang underscored the championship's significance beyond competitive sports, linking it to discipline, culture and youth empowerment.
The programme featured traditional ceremonies, including the hoisting of the NWA flag and torch lighting by noteworthy participants. Cultural performances, including folk songs from various tribes, showcased the rich heritage and involvement of young wrestlers from multiple Naga communities such as Angami, Chakhesang, Zeliang and others.
The day's events included the inaugural NWA Under-15 Championship and Provisional Championship, showcasing emerging talent and reinforcing the spirit of traditional Naga wrestling.
