REGIONAL: Iarisha Kharbhoi, an Aapda Mitra Volunteer from East Khasi Hills District, has been invited as a Special Guest to the Republic Day Celebration 2026 in New Delhi in recognition to her significant contributions to disaster management. As a Master Trainer under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme, she has enhanced disaster preparedness at the grassroots level through extensive volunteer work with the District Disaster Management Authority.
Kharbhoi has trained individuals in search and rescue, first aid, and conducted mock drills involving youth, students, security personnel, and community members. Her exceptional response during the October 2023 fire incident in Shillong exemplifies her commitment, where she participated in evacuation efforts, managed relief camps and provided essential supplies over a two-week period, even undertaking night shifts.
She has engaged in school safety programs, NCC camps and awareness initiatives to promote sustainable disaster preparedness within the community. Her invitation to the Republic Day event acknowledges the crucial role of Aapda Mitra Volunteers in fostering a resilient nation and highlights the dedication of grassroots volunteers in Meghalaya.
It is also noted that the District Disaster Management Authority trained 202 Aapda Mitra Volunteers in 2022-23 and 600 in 2025-2026, establishing a significant resource for disaster management.
