GLOBAL, November 11, 2024: There is a visible rift between dominant student leaders and the interim government led by Dr Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh regarding the appointment of new advisors. Students at Dhaka University Monday demanded the removal of Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, whom they claimed is linked to the previous regime.
The protest took place at the Raju Memorial Sculpture on campus where students voiced their demand.
The advisor council of Dr Muhammad Yunus was expanded with the appointment of Sheikh Bashir Uddin, Farooki and Md Mahfuj Alam as new advisors. Farooki was assigned to the Ministry of Culture Affairs while Bashir was given responsibility for the Ministries of Commerce, Jute and Textiles.
It is believed that Dr Yunus carefully chose Sunday evening for the swearing-in of the new advisors hours before leaving for Azerbaijan to attend the COP29 climate summit. The chief advisor will be away until the November 14 to get rid of heat of protests back home.
