António Guterres meets with President Droupadi Murmu
WORLD: António Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, met with India's President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi Friday. During the meeting, President Murmu supported Guterres' initiative to establish a global scientific panel on AI aimed at benefiting humanity.
Guterres acknowledged India's influential role in hosting the AI Impact Summit and its ongoing collaboration with the UN.
President Murmu highlighted the challenges facing multilateralism amid global uncertainties, noting a significant trust deficit. She emphasized the necessity of reforming the outdated UN Security Council framework to reflect current geopolitical realities, advocating for stronger representation of the Global South in decision-making processes.
She articulated that urgent reform is crucial for the UN's relevance and effectiveness.
Murmu recognised the 'UN-80' initiative as a promising avenue for reform but stressed the importance of safeguarding the developmental priorities of the Global South in any restructuring efforts. She concluded the meeting by extending her best wishes for Guterres' continued leadership and reaffirmed India's commitment to multilateralism.
