By Various Feb 17, 2026 48

WORLD: BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman Tuesday sworn in as Bangladesh's new Prime Minister following a significant electoral victory for his party. He formed a 50-member cabinet that features a mix of new appointments and experienced politicians, highlighting a shift in governance.

The cabinet includes 25 ministers and 24 state ministers, with Rahman leading as the Prime Minister.

Among the experienced figures, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been allocated the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, while Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is set to handle the finance and planning ministries. Additionally, Salahuddin Ahmed, a close ally of Tarique and a former BNP negotiator in the Election Commission, has taken on the role of Minister of Home Affairs.

A notable addition to the cabinet is Khalilur Rahman, a seasoned diplomat who has allotted external affairs ministry, despite not being a member of parliament or the BNP. He previously served as the national security advisor in the interim government headed by Dr Muhammad Yunus.

The composition of the cabinet suggests a strategic blend of innovation and reliance on seasoned leadership to navigate the country's political landscape.
