NATIONAL, November 26, 2025: UIDAI has deactivated over two crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons as part of a clean-up operation aimed at maintaining the accuracy of the Aadhaar database. Data has been sourced from various entities, including the Registrar General of India, States and Union Territories as well as public welfare programs.
The UIDAI officials asserted that Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned and deactivation is crucial to prevent identity fraud and unauthorized access to welfare benefits. To facilitate this process, UIDAI introduced a Reporting of death facility on the myAadhaar Portal for registered deaths in 25 states and UTs, with plans to integrate additional regions.
Family members can authenticate their identity on the portal and submit relevant details including the Aadhaar number and Death Registration Number of the deceased to initiate the deactivation process following validation.
UIDAI encourages Aadhaar holders to report familial deaths after acquiring death certificates from the respective authorities.
