AGARTALA, November 25, 2025: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the state now supplies electricity for 23 hours and 49 minutes daily, ranking fourth nationally in power distribution. Villages receive 23 hours and 43 minutes, while cities get 23 hours and 59 minutes, he said after laying foundation stone for the 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Project at Rukhiya in Sepahijala district Tuesday.
This improvement from approximately 21 hours of supply before the incumbent government is attributed to the efforts of the Power Department over the last seven and a half years as reported by the National Feeder Monitoring System (NFMS).
The power plant at Rukhiya was developed across six phases from 1990 to 2006. Presently a meagre 19 MW is generated due to insufficient gas supply, though the Rukhiya Gas-based Thermal Power Plant has a total capacity of 63 MW.
The additional upcoming project supported by the Asian Development Bank aims to convert the existing setup into a more efficient 120 MW combined cycle system by utilizing excess hot gas to drive a steam turbine, enhancing overall efficiency from 35–45% to 60%. The project is expected to cost Rs 1,320 crore and has a three-year timeline to complete.
The minister said the state government is also exploring the construction of an 800 MW pumped storage project at Chawmanu in Dhalai district, which would be the first in the North-East, significantly boosting the state's economic progress.
