AGARTALA, August 22, 2025: Committee on Privileges of the Tripura assembly has taken cognizance of a complaint lodged by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul against two daily vernacular newspapers for reporting against him. The committee has summoned the editors of the newspapers to appear in person at its meeting slated for September 4.
The Secretary of the state assembly SK Majumder has notified schedules and the agenda of the meeting. The notice informed that the Privilege Committee would hear the editors of the daily newspapers on the question of alleged breach of privilege raised by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul regarding the publication of news on different dates in April last.
BJP MLA Binay Bhushan Das has been chairman of the Committee on Privileges.
The news items that appeared in the newspapers related to the activities of the Deputy Speaker, which allegedly violated the tenets of his position as Deputy Speaker and the leader of the BJP. Paul denied involvement in any malpractices and took to social media to vent his anger against the newspapers.
His outrageous comments aggrieved a forum of journalists that had urged the Chief Minister to initiate action against Ram Prasad Paul. A delegation of the forum also met the Chief Minister to press the demand.
The last privilege motion before now was issued against Late Gautam Das, editor of the Daily Desher Katha of CPI(M) in 1992. But the charge against him was dropped at the request of former Congress Chief Minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder, who in the assembly session called for pardon of Das, which was immediately supported by then Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Barman.
