REGIONAL, August 21, 2025: The District Magistrate in East Khasi Hills District in Meghalaya has imposed a night curfew from 8 pm to 6 am within a radius of one km from the Zero Line of International Border with Bangladesh to prevent illegal activities. The order cites the menace of smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel-nut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes and Chai Patti.
The enforcement is also aimed at preventing cross-border movement of unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant groups, smugglers and other illegal activities on the Indo-Bangladesh Border. The order comes into effect immediately and will remain in force for two months from the date of its issue, officials said.
The porous border areas in the East Khasi Hills are prone to infiltration by illegal migrants and organised crime syndicate members linked to anti-national elements including armed rebel groups.
