Capt Williamson A Sangma recalled on his 35th death anniversary

REGIONAL, October 25, 2025: A memorial service was held in Tura Saturday to honour the 35th death anniversary of Meghalaya's first Chief Minister Capt Williamson A Sangma. The event aimed to honour the visionary statesman whose leadership laid the foundation for Meghalaya's identity and peaceful attainment of statehood.
A book titled "Capt Williamson A. Sangma – Architect of Meghalaya" was released as part of the commemoration.
The speaker Thomas A Sangma highlighted Capt Sangma's unwavering commitment to democratic values and peace, stating that Meghalaya achieved statehood without violence. He also praised Capt Sangma's role in fostering unity among the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes, highlighting the legacy of mutual respect and collective determination.
Dr Andrew Simons, author of the book, expressed gratitude to the family of Capt Sangma and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Library for providing invaluable archival materials. The initiative aims to inform younger generations about Capt Sangma's leadership and principles of non-violence.
