NATIONAL, August 06, 2025: The bamboo sector in India is primarily under the responsibility of State Governments with the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) assisting in developing the bamboo value chain by linking growers with artisans and consumers, the union government informed parliament Wednesday. The NBM promotes bamboo cultivation, industries, value addition and marketing, particularly in the North Eastern Region.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has also introduced standards for ensuring the quality of bamboo products, while the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has engaged with stakeholders to ensure bamboo growers and artisans meet export standards.
The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has encouraged the use of innovative bamboo-based building materials with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) incorporating engineered bamboo products into its standard Schedule of Rates and specifications.
Meanwhile the government of Assam has approved the inclusion of engineered bamboo Composite Materials into the Public Works Department's Schedule of Rates, mandating at least 5% of bamboo-based material in new public buildings. This initiative aims to boost the bamboo industry, create economic opportunities for local producers, and encourage sustainable construction practices.
