The ECI starts process to elect new Vice President of India

Commission is responsible to conduct election under Article 324 of Constitution

NATIONAL, July 23, 2025: Election Commission of India (ECI) Wednesday launched a process for conducting the election for the Vice President after the Ministry of Home Affairs informed of the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar.  The MHA had earlier announced the resignation through a Gazette Notification.

The ECI is responsible for conducting the election for the Vice President under Article 324 of the constitution and the relevant laws. Preparations for the Vice-Presidential Elections in 2025 are already underway. 

This includes creating the Electoral College, finalising the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers, and preparing background material on past Vice-Presidential Elections. The Election Schedule will be announced as soon as the preparatory activities are completed, the commission said in a statement.
