AGARTALA, July 17, 2024: Tripura government demolished a powerful club house Wednesday, citing illegal construction and encroachment. The district administration has reclaimed a large amount of land from the illegal occupation.
The demolition of the Bharat Ratna Sangha, located near the MBB Airport in Agartala, has been praised by many without any criticism from any group. However, the club was only demolished after its Secretary was shot down by a rival group on April 30.
The district administration and the civic body obtained permission from higher authorities before taking this stern action. It is uncertain whether the club will be revived through political maneuvering or if it will be permanently shut down.
The club, which hosts a high-budget Durga puja every year, is believed to use this event to cover up its illegal activities. It has received support from ministers and leaders of various political parties.
These politicians have protected the club from clutches of law enforcement agencies for years. The club has been accused of various crimes, including land grabbing, extortion, human and drug trafficking, gun trading, intimidation and targeted assassination.
Even a retired police officer who investigated the club during his service claims that they were unable to take action against the club officials due to political interference. Money also played a significant role in influencing the authorities, according to him.
The incumbent state government must equally take action against all criminal rackets, regardless of any political ties. The root cause must be addressed and a solution must be found.
As Geoffrey Chaucer said in 1386, "For better than never is late; never to succeed would be too long a period." It is now 2024 and government must act before it is too late.
