
AGARTALA: The joint meeting of legislators from the BJP and alliance parties Thursday selected veteran Rampada Jamatia as the new Speaker of the Tripura State Assembly. The formal election procedure in the state assembly is expected to take place tomorrow.
Jamatia, who had previously served as the Hoda Okra (leader) of the apex traditional and social council of the Jamatia tribe in Tripura, was elected to the state assembly from the Bagma constituency in south Tripura in 2018 and 2023. He also served as a minister in the state council during the first BJP-led government.
The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and graced by BJP state President Rajiv Bhattacharjee, was also attended by almost all BJP ministers and MLAs. The alliance parties, IPFT and Tipra Motha, were represented by Sukla Charan Noatia and Animesh Debbarma.
In a statement following the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed his confidence in Jamatia's long political experience, dedication and leadership, and wished him success in his new role as Speaker. He also stated that he believes Jamatia's leadership will contribute to making the functioning of the Legislative Assembly more effective in the future.
