Tamil Nadu: 40 people die in stampede at actor Vijay’s rally

Over 45 people injured, Prime Minster said “deeply saddening”

NATIONAL, September 27, 2025: 40 people including children and women lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a political rally led by actor turned politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, Saturday evening. Over 45 people are currently receiving medical treatment following the incident, officials said.

Chief Minister MK Stalin held an emergency meeting with key state officials to assess the situation. Reports indicate that dozens of people fainted during Vijay's speech, necessitating emergency transportation to hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence stating the incident is "deeply saddening" and offering thoughts and prayers to the affected families and those injured. Union Home Minister, Congress president and prominent leaders of various parties conveyed shock and grief over loss of lives in the Karur rally.
