NATIONAL, September 26, 2025: Social and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested Friday and charged under the National Security Act (NSA) following violent protests in Ladakh that caused four deaths and numerous injuries. Police moved him out of Ladakh while the local administration shut down mobile internet in Leh as a safety measure.
Wangchuk's arrest was unexpected as he was supposed to speak at a press conference but failed to arrive. The organisers expressed concern but learned he had been taken by the police.
They acknowledged that recent violence was caused by young people, though dismissed any foreign involvement in the troubles.
