Ordered state police to ensure peaceful elections Thursday

AGARTALA, November 23 2021: The Supreme Court which gave an urgent hearing into a writ petition moved by the Trinamool Congress Tuesday refused to stall municipal elections in Tripura slated for November 25. It however passed an order directed to top brass of state police to ensure free and fair election.
The petitioner complained spate of violence taking place at behest of the ruling party of the state.
“DGP and IG (l&O), and Home Secretary shall be responsible to see that the election process on Election Day leading to declaration of result is peaceful”, the court order said.
It directed the state government to submit a complete report containing tabulated details of complaints made, FIRs registered, action taken and arrests made in each cases of complaints.
Key points of the order are -
1. Court refused Trinamool Congress prayer for postponement of Urban body elections in Tripura.
2. Court also refused prayer for appointment of independent observer like any retired election commissioner.
3. Court directed DGP and IG (L&O) to have meeting with state election commissioner by tomorrow morning to assess the situation of security to ensure peaceful elections.
4. If additional deployment of central forces is considered by them, they may make a requisition to CRPF or the MHA who will consider the request.
5. DGP and IG (l&O), and Home Secretary shall be responsible to see that the election process on Election Day leading to declaration of result on November 28 is peaceful.
6. The compliance to be filed by November 25 to contain tabulated details of complaints made, FIRs registered, action taken and arrests made in each case of complaints.
Hearing of the case will again be taken up on November 25.
