GLOBAL, November 07, 2025: The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) will launch the Amazon Assessment Report 2025 – Connectivity of the Amazon for a Living Planet (AR2025) at COP30 slated for November 11 in Belém. Produced by 145 leading scientists and experts, the report is the most comprehensive scientific assessment of the Amazon since the SPA’s 2021 landmark publication, presenting new data, regional analysis and actionable pathways to conserve one of the planet’s most vital ecosystems.
The AR2025 emphasizes that safeguarding Amazonian connectivity — the ecological, climatic, cultural, and socio-economic interdependence that sustains both the Basin and the planet — is essential to preventing irreversible collapse. The report provides a scientific foundation for evidence-based decision-making to halt deforestation, restore degraded lands, protect biodiversity, strengthen Indigenous territorial rights and promote sustainable socio-bioeconomies.
“The Amazon is not only a regional concern — it is a global safeguard. The AR2025 provides the scientific foundation policymakers need to act decisively to conserve connectivity, stabilize the climate, protect biodiversity and ensure livelihoods,” stressed Dr Carlos Nobre, SPA Co-Chair.
Besides Carlos Nobre, Co-Chair, SPA, Dr. Marielos Peña-Claros, Co-Chair, SPA and Emma Torres, Vice President, United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) will grace the event.
The SPA (https://www.sp-amazon.org/), convened by the SDSN in 2020, is the first high-level scientific initiative dedicated to the Amazon. With over 300 experts, including Indigenous and local voices, the SPA delivers authoritative assessments and policy recommendations to address deforestation, climate change and biodiversity loss. Dr Jeffrey Sachs, President of the SDSN, is the convener of the SPA; Emma Torres is the strategic coordinator, and Dr Carlos Nobre and Dr Marielos Peña-Claros are the co-chairs.
