GLOBAL, November 07, 2025: A police sergeant in Bangladesh capital Dhaka has been withdrawn from his position after a video surfaced showing him bowing and touching the feet of senior BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a political event in Mirpur area Friday. This incident has heightened scrutiny on the relationship between the security forces and the BNP especially with upcoming parliamentary elections taking place without the Awami League, which is currently banned from political activities.
Critics are alleging that elements within the Bangladeshi security establishments and civil administration are aligning themselves with the BNP potentially indicating a bias that could affect the political landscape despite previous claims of reforms that have not materialized.
Following the video's widespread circulation and the subsequent online backlash, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued an office order detaching Traffic Sergeant Ariful Islam from his duties and assigning him to the city police headquarters. The official statement confirmed this action was taken in compliance with order from the higher authorities after the public's reaction to the incident.
