GLOBAL, December 28, 2024: Russian President Vladimir Putin Saturday apologised to Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev for the crash of a civilian airliner that killed 38 people. The incident occurred in Russian airspace, where the airliner had repeatedly attempted to land at the Grozny airport which was being attacked by Ukrainian combat drones.
Putin stated that Russian air defence systems repelled these attacks.
An investigation is underway and civilian and military specialists are being interrogated. The Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash occurred near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Christmas day, killing 38 of the 67 on board. The crash was attributed to external physical and technical interference with multiple holes in the fuselage injuries sustained by passengers and crew and testimonies from surviving passengers and crew.
Two US military officials have suggested that the plane may have been hit by Russian missiles.
