NATIONAL, June 28, 2024: The Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations 2024, set to come into effect on July 1, aims to prevent fraudulent SIM swaps and replacements. They introduce an additional criterion for rejecting requests for a Unique Porting Code (UPC), stating that a UPC cannot be allocated if the request is made before seven days from the date of SIM swap or replacement.
On the other the new Telecom Act 2023, partially implemented on June 26 enhances citizen privacy and safeguards telecom networks. It replaces the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Indian Wireless Telegraph Act of 1933.
The Act sets standards for telecom equipment manufacturing, import, and sale, and safeguards networks. It designates critical infrastructure, mandates security upgrades and regulates services and equipment for public safety and disaster management.
The Act maintains uniform provisions for possession and monitoring as in the previous Act.
