Manipur violence: Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigns
Decision after dissidents stepped up pressure for a change

REGIONAL, February 09, 2024: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has Sunday resigned two years after ethnic violence erupted in the state. This move is seen as an attempt to suppress dissidence within the state BJP against his leadership.
State’s main opposition party, Congress, has described his resignation as a belated vindication of their demand. The Governor has suspended the budget session of the Manipur Assembly.
The National Peoples' Party (NPP) of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had earlier withdrawn their support from the Biren Singh government. Singh stepped down after consulting with the Central leadership, including party chief JP Nadda and Union Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
Reports suggest that a dozen of BJP MLAs have been pushing for a change in leadership while there are around six who are undecided. This could have influenced central BJP leadership to enforce a leadership change ahead of the Budget session in the state.
