REGIONAL, November 11, 2024: A gunfight between security forces and suspected militants in Manipur's Jiribam district resulted in the death of eleven Kuki militants Monday. Two Central Reserve Police Force personnel were injured in the incident with one in critical condition.
The militants, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, launched an attack on the Borobekra police station and CRPF camp. Some of the militants also went to a nearby market, where they set fire to shops and attacked houses.
Security forces engaged in a retaliatory attack killing eleven militants in an hour long fighting. Police said five persons housed in a nearby relief camp were reported missing prompting a search.
Prohibitory orders were subsequently imposed in the area. This incident adds to the ongoing ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups that already claimed over 200 deaths and the displacement of thousands in Manipur.
