NATIONAL, March 20, 2025: In the coming days, Maharashtra is expected to see further growth in the bamboo sector with a significant contribution from Tripura. According to renowned bamboo artist and activist Meenakshi Mukesh Walke, coordination is crucial for India to establish itself as a global leader in the bamboo industry.
Walke made these remarks during her visit to the BCDI and Tripura Bamboo Mission in Agartala as part of her ten-day study tour. She laid stress for potential for future opportunities in the bamboo and cane sector as well as the importance of empowering women in this field.
During her visit, Walke met with BCDI chief Abhinav Kant and discussed various aspects of the bamboo industry. She also had discussions with Sukanta Das and other senior officials of the Tripura Bamboo Mission.
Maharashtra's Environment Minister Pankaja Munde and Principal Secretary Vinita Ved Singhal recently visited the region and made significant decisions regarding the bamboo sector. Walke commended these efforts and highlighted the importance of the recent budget provision for bamboo made by Finance Minister Ajit Pawar.
As the creator of India's first bamboo QR code scanner, Walke has been actively working towards the development of tribal, deprived and Naxal-affected areas in India. She has trained over 1100 women from four states and is committed to empowering women at the grassroots level.
During her visit to Tripura, she also discussed this issue with renowned artist Dhiman Das. She is optimistic about the future of the bamboo industry in Maharashtra and believes that significant progress will be made soon.
Walke also drew attention to some key issues that need to be addressed. She suggested that the Forest Research Institute in Chandrapur should be transformed into a bamboo research centre and bamboo should be included in the curriculum, particularly in technical education.
She also recommended appointing a brand ambassador for bamboo and promoting it through self-help groups. She praised the goals and policies of the Tripura government, which are in line with the development of the bamboo industry.
As someone who has created bamboo crowns for world-class beauty contests, Walke is aware of the potential for bamboo jewelry in Tripura. She believes that Maharashtra has a supportive environment for this and is committed to making it a reality.
