NATIONAL, April 15, 2024: The Election Commission of India has reported a record seizure of 4 thousand 650 crore (4.5 billion) rupees by enforcement agencies before the start of the 18th Lok Sabha elections. This marks a significant increase from the 3,000 crore rupees seized during the entire 2019 election.
The seizure was made possible through comprehensive planning, collaboration and unified deterrence action from agencies and citizen participation. The Commission has also taken strict action against 106 government staffs who have been found to assist politicians in campaigning, violating the Code of Conduct and instructions.
The commission in a statement Monday asserted that the enhanced seizures reflect its commitment to monitor inducements and curb electoral malpractices for a level playing field, particularly for smaller and less resourceful parties.
