Journalist in Bangladesh severely assaulted at national day event
A BNP leader, his supporters named in complaint with police assuring action

GLOBAL, February 23, 2025: A local BNP leader has been accused of assaulting a journalist at the Shaheed Minar in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh. Abdullah Al Mahmud, Upazila correspondent for Dhaka-based Daily Kalbela and NTV, filed a case against Upazila BNP General Secretary Bashir Uddin and four others.
The complaint also names 20-25 unidentified perpetrators. Mahmud was covering a news story when BNP activists allegedly beat two National Citizens' Committee activists, accusing them of being members of the Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League.
Bashir and his supporters allegedly snatched Mahmud's phone and physically assaulted him causing serious injuries. The victim journalist is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Police said ‘raids’ are on-going to arrest those involved.
