GLOBAL, December 08, 2024: The Indian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus remains operational and in contact with all Indian nationals despite the dramatic fall of President Bashar al-Assad's and family’s over five-decade rule. The situation in Syria remains a focal point for other nations after Syrian rebels entered Damascus forcing President Assad to flee for an unknown destination.
This development came hours after coalition of insurgents claimed to have captured Syria's third-largest city Homs. The head of Syria's main opposition group abroad, Hadi al-Bahra, stated that Damascus is now without Bashar al-Assad and the “tyrant” leader has fled.
The whereabouts of the deposed President are still not clear with some reports suggesting he fled to Russia while a few claimed to have died in a plane crash he boarded after stepping down Sunday morning.
India earlier issued a travel warning for its citizens in view of fast development unfolding in the war-ravaged country.
