AGARTALA, September 19 2023: Canada, which is a realm of the British Monarch, Tuesday made a sinister attempt to embarrass India within days of successful completion of the G20 Summit at New Delhi. The political and government establishments of the country were taken back by surprise when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused ‘agents’ of India for the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar – a listed and notorious terrorist - in his country.
To add to surprise, the Canadian government also expelled a senior diplomat of the Indian High Commission for his alleged link to the June 2023 gun attack in British Columbia State. India spent no time responding to the actions and summoned the Canadian High Commissioner at New Delhi to the foreign office to serve him a protest note.
In an apparent tit-for-tat move, India also expelled a Canadian official from New Delhi with a five days deadline to leave the country. India’s MEA has also rejected the claims and countered suggesting Canada allows ‘free run of 12 terrorist organisations’ on its soil.
Such awkward diplomatic maneuvering has not been witnessed in recent years, which in fact regular postures with Pakistan till the diplomatic ties were cut to the size. From trade to manpower Canada has been India’s closest ally and tension to this down was attributed as uncalled for.
Understanding the adversaries of his actions, the Canadian Prime Minister offered an olive branch and said he expected reciprocation from India. But he crafted a damage be it small.
