NATIONAL, October 11, 2024: India and Lao PDR have signed six MoUs and agreements in various fields, including defence cooperation, customs, audio-visual preservation and heritage preservation. India has also agreed to provide one million US dollars in financial assistance to a project aimed at improving nutrition security in Laos through food fortification, funded by the India-UN Development Partnership Fund.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lao PDR Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone Friday held bilateral talks in Vientiane, discussing areas such as development partnership, capacity building, disaster management, renewable energy, heritage restoration, economic ties, defense collaboration, and people-to-people ties.
Modi also met with Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit, where they discussed bilateral cooperation in various areas and exchanged views on ways to forge closer cooperation in sub-regional, regional and multilateral.
India's ties with Thailand are an important pillar of India's Act East policy and Vision of the Indo-Pacific. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of a free, open, inclusive, prosperous and rules-based Indo-Pacific for the peace and progress of the entire region.
He highlighted the need for development rather than expansionism and emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity and international laws. He also referred to terrorism as a serious challenge to global peace and security and called for cooperation in cyber, maritime and space.
