Human rights commission takes cognizance of custodial death
Police got two weeks to complete investigation, submit report

AGARTALA, October 20, 2024: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the state police to investigate a custodial death in south Tripura. Badal Tripura, a 34-year-old man, was allegedly beaten up in the lockup of the Manu Bazar Police Station in south Tripura, causing severe injuries. Police were given two weeks to complete enquiry and submit report.
He was arrested on October 13 last and later died a day after being admitted to the hospital. The death sparked protests with local tribal residents staging demonstration outside the Manu Bazar police station and blocking the main highway.
The state police suspended and arrested five personnel, including a sub-inspector, a constable, and three SPOs on charge of causing severe injuries on Badal Tripura at the police station. They have been remanded to police custody.
