NATIONAL, October 25, 2024: NTPC has collaborated with the Indian Army to establish a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul, Ladakh providing stable power supply using Green Hydrogen in off-grid Army locations. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the project via video conferencing with the Chief of India defence services and other officials present.
The 200kW system, operational year-round will replace diesel gensets in harsh winter conditions, reaching temperatures of -30°C at 4,400 meters altitude. The microgrid offers advantages such as integrating renewable energy, stable power supply under adverse conditions reduced carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.
This initiative harnesses Ladakh's solar irradiance improving energy self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on fuel logistics. NTPC also initiated a hydrogen bus trial in Leh and plans for hydrogen fuelling stations, solar plants and fuel cell buses in Leh.
NTPC aims for 60GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and focuses on green hydrogen technology and decarbonisation efforts including hydrogen blending and electric buses.
