Governor rule in tribal council, GK Rao Chief Administrator

AGARTALA, May 18 2020: Governor Ramesh Bais appointed former Chief Secretary GK Rao as Chief Administrator of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) after the former was vested with its authority. Governor’s rule in the council has been exercised in compliance with rules of Sixth Schedule of the Constitution as elections could not be held within the timeframe owing to Covid-19 triggered national lockdown.
Rao, a seasoned bureaucrat, assumed office of the Chief Administrator Monday soon a day after his formal appointment. His appointment will remain in force for six months, but can be extended further with assent of the assembly.
CPI(M) led left front ruled the TTAADC for five years and completed its tenure Sunday. The elations was slated for April, but could not be held due to present health crisis.
With appointment of GK Rao the Governor also turned down a proposal of state’s ruling coalition partner Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) to appoint tribal welfare minister Mebar Kumar Jamatia as Chief Administrator without compromising his position as a minister.
