NATIONAL, April 30, 2025: In a significant development, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday approved caste enumeration in the upcoming Indian census. This decision demonstrates the government's commitment to the holistic interests and values of the nation and society.
Caste enumeration is a union subject listed at 69 in the Union List in the Seventh Schedule and it is hoped that this will ensure a stronger economic and social fabric allowing the country's progress without hindrance. Caste was excluded from all census operations since independence, but was considered in 2010 by Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh.
A Group of Ministers was formed to deliberate on the matter and most political parties recommended conducting a caste census. The previous government opted for a survey, known as the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC).
