Gauhati HC CJ visits remote jail to see old and ill inmates
Legal aid programme aims to equip prisoners with employable skills

REGIONAL, January 11, 2025: Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Patron-in-Chief of Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), visited the District Jail of Lawngtlai, a prison in southern Mizoram, Saturday. The purpose of the visit was to support the "Special Campaign for Old Prisoners & Terminally Ill Prisoners & Skill Development" initiative.
During his visit, Justice Bishnoi highlighted the efforts of the National, State and District Legal Services Authorities to ensure fair justice for all. He underlined the implementation of a 'Skill Development and Enhancement Programme' in all jails across India, which aims to equip prisoners with employable skills and help them lead a normal life upon release.
He underlined importance of respecting the rights of prisoners even if they cannot be released immediately. He called for cooperation between private individuals, NGOs and government departments in the Special Campaign for Old Prisoners & Terminally Ill Prisoners & Skill Development.
