Fisheries and aquaculture sector sees significant growth in India

REGIONAL, January 05, 2024: The Indian fisheries and aquaculture sector, which supports around 3 crore fishers and farmers, has seen significant growth since the establishment of a dedicated Ministry and Department of Fisheries in 2019. The Northeastern Region (NER) of India, known for its rich aquatic biodiversity and vast water resources has seen remarkable growth through government investments of ₹2,114.73 crore under the Blue Revolution and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) since 2014-15.
This has expanded fish production from 3.78 lakh MT in 2013-14 to 6.41 lakh MT in 2023-24, alongside advancements in hatcheries, scientific fish farming techniques and infrastructure. The Department of Fisheries is organising a "Northeastern Region States Meet to review the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana" January 6 at a private hotel in Guwahati.
The event will inaugurate key projects amounting to about Rs 50 crore under PMMSY, and distribute certificates to fisheries beneficiaries. To continue and sustain sectoral growth, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India will be notified for the development of an Organic Fisheries Cluster in the Soreng District of Sikkim for organic fisheries and aquaculture.
The event will also include a technical session on "Issues and Challenges in Fisheries & Aquaculture in the NER," presented by Dr JK Jena, Deputy Director General, ICAR (Fisheries).
