NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of report, 80 pc deaths unidentified

NATIONAL, January 30, 2025: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday took a suo motu cognisance of a news media report that claimed 474 people lost their lives in Delhi during winter between December 15, 2024 and January 10, 2025 due to the lack of essential protective measures like warm clothing, blankets and adequate shelters.
The content claimed that about 80% of the unidentified dead bodies are believed to be homeless individuals.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Delhi, calling for a detailed report within one week. The report also highlights the health challenges faced by homeless individuals including respiratory infections, skin ailments and deteriorating mental health.
