AGARTALA, August 09 2020: Police Sunday detained nearly one hundred CPI(M) workers including some leaders on charge of organising an unlawful assembly with intention to stage a protest. Those detained for violating restrictions and prohibitory orders include former MP Jitendra Choudhury and former assembly deputy speaker Pabitra Kar.
CPI(M) attempted to hold the protest under banner of a few affiliated organisations like the CITU. The protest was aimed at raising demands against alleged anti people policies of the BJP led central and state governments, and imposition of ‘unplanned lockdowns’.
Leaders said they came to press total seven demands in favour of common people.
Police officers who rushed to the spot with security contingents refused to allow the agitation citing restrictions and prohibitory orders like the Section 144 enforced to prevent spread of coronavirus.
The leaders and workers were detained, but set free after a few hours.
