AGARTALA, June 09, 2024: BSF shot dead a Bangladeshi smuggler at Kalamchera border in Sepahijala district Sunday. The deceased identified as Anwar Hussain, 35, was a resident of Mirpur village in Comilla district.
This was second fatality of a Bangladeshi this year in Tripura after a youth was shot dead at Magroli border in north Tripura on March 17 last. BSF claimed its troops fired in self-defence.
A BSF statement issued from its Tripura Frontier headquarters said “BSF troops stationed at BOP Kalamchera observed a large group of smugglers armed with sharp weapons attempting to cross the International Border. Despite being warned to stop, the smugglers ignored the warning and became aggressive, attempting to surround and attack the BSF Jawan on duty and steal his personal weapon”.
“In response to the imminent threat to his life and government property, the BSF Jawan fired one round of PAG in self-defense. However, this only seemed to embolden the smugglers, who continued their aggressive actions. A scuffle ensued, during which Ct Rajeev Kumar, fearing for his life and weapon, was forced to fire one round from his INSAS rifle”.
“As a result, one Bangladeshi smuggler was killed near the border fence, approximately 150 yards inside Indian territory. A thorough search of the area was conducted, and a large quantity of sugar, four machetes, and wooden planks were recovered”.
“The deceased was identified as Anwar Hussain, 35 years old, from Mirpur, Ward No-5, PS Burichong, District Comilla, Bangladesh. This is not the first incident of its kind in the area, as a similar incident occurred on June 2 where the same group of Bangladeshi smugglers brutally assaulted a BSF Constable, attempted to drag him towards the Bangladesh side, and stole his personal weapon and radio set”.
