BJP-led alliance retains power in key Assam state
Special Representative
GUWAHATI, May 02 2021: The BJP-led alliance in Assam has retained power in Assam for the second time on the trot. History scripted in the state as a non-Congress party led alliance returned to power for the second consecutive term for the first time in the state.
Assam BJP leader and the party’s key poll strategist Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who has won from Jalukbari LAC with huge margin of over one lakh votes for the 5th consecutive term, said that the BJP-led alliance’s poll triumph in Assam was actually “a people’s mandate for protection of civilisation and culture” coupled with the development agenda pushed by the saffron party under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The other constituents of the BJP-led alliance are three regional parties - AGP, UPPL and GSP.
The Congress-led mahajot comprising AIUDF and BPF failed to make any impressive show as people have rejected the Congress’ ‘five guarantees’ while the party’s poll-tie up with the AIUDF was not taken well by voters in eastern Assam and the AIUDF leader Badaruddin Ajmal has no base at all in key eastern Assam constituencies where BJP and AGP once again delivered starling performance.
The Congress was fighting the election with a chief ministerial candidate and sans guidance of veteran Tarun Gogoi, who died a few months before election,
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora tonight resigned owning up the responsibility for demoralising defeat of Congress party in Assam Assembly polls. He has sent his resignation letter to the AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
