AGARTALA, August 30, 2024: Arshiya Das, the first female chess master from North East India, faced humiliation at home after winning the gold medal in the Britz category of the Commonwealth Chess Under-14 Competition in Sri Lanka on Thursday. An official from the Tripura Chess Association made a provocative comment on social media insulting the young champion from Tripura.
This sparked anger among chess enthusiasts, who demanded the removal of Abhijit Ghosh, the Organising Secretary, from the chess association. In his defence, Ghosh claimed that his Facebook account had been hacked and notified the chess organization of this claim through an email Friday.
The president of the state association Abhijit Mallick defended Arshiya and called for an urgent meeting to address the incident. Pradip Roy, Secretary of the State Chess Association, also condemned the incident and called for strict action to be taken.
Bapi Deb, Secretary of the Tripura Chess Association, expressed disappointment and called for a meeting to discuss the incident. This is not the first time Ghosh has made such a comment, as he had previously done so when Arshiya returned to the state after winning a medal in Sri Lanka last July.
The state’s Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and his predecessor Biplab Kumar Deb congratulated Arshiya on her two international successes.
